I recently watched this Ted Talk by David Puttnam about how the media should owe a duty of care to society for its published content. Those of you interested in law, journalism and politics should definitely check it out..
Personally, I agree that a novel duty of care should be created to encompass the media or at very least the media in a political context. Although this could be argued as censorship, should those negatively impacting the success of our democratic system have a voice?
The fourth estate should be the watchdog for the public as a whole, only searching and saying the truth with an unbiased voice. So that the public can have an informed debate rather than being given a side to choose from.
For context: A duty of care includes the notions of reasonable care and reasonable foreseeability.
